TRUMP CARDS
âWHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU two?â Tilley hissed as soon as the door closed behind Amelia. âI thought you had a plan. I thought this was all worked out.â
âWell, we thought it was, too,â Liv said. âObviously.â
Tilley stood up, an impassioned rant coming on. âThose two gave me something to look forward to again. Babies. Weddings.â She cocked her head to the side. âIn the wrong order, of course, but even still, they did. They made me feel like life was taking a turn for the better.â
I sighed. âTilley, for heavenâs sake, sit down. We know. We wanted it to work out, too. But theyâre not children anymore. This isnât like the cotillion; we canât force them into it. They have to come together in their own time.â I paused and took a sip of tea. âI have to believe they will.â
âOrâ¦â Tilley interjected.
A wicked smile popped across Oliviaâs face, and she said the phrase that kept my stomach in knots, the one I hoped she wouldnât. âOr we play the trump cards.â
I sighed. The trump cards: the big, monumental things that Liv and I kept in our skirt pockets in case we ever needed them. Weâd joked a lot about those two ending up together, and I have to say that, on this trip, I was convinced they might. A woman does not offer to have a manâs dead wifeâs babies out of the goodness of her heart. That is a thing that one does only out of pure, unadulterated love. But my trump card was one I did not ever want to have to play. Not now. Not ever.
âYou play yours, Olivia. Iâm not ready.â
Tilley rolled her eyes. âItâs a new day,â she said. âPeople donât look at things the same way. She wonât blame you.â
And thatâs what I had worried about all these years, right? Being blamed. Everything somehow being my fault, like I had secretly suspected. Amelia not understanding. I looked Tilley in the eye, wondering if maybe she wasnât having as good a day as I had thought.
Olivia locked her gaze on me. âLiz, itâs not fair to make me play mine if you donât have to play yours.â
âBut you have to,â I disagreed. âEventually, Parker has to know. Amelia never does.â
She sipped her tea. âI suppose thatâs true.â
âLetâs give it a few months,â Tilley moderated. âThey will have had the chance to sort through these very strong emotions and perhaps the truth will come to light all on its own, no meddling necessary.â
I nodded optimistically, but I had to say that that very real possibilityâthat the truth would come to light on its ownâhaunted me night and day.
